The first effects produced by barbiturates are typically pleasant, reducing tension and inducing calm, and high doses can result in anesthesia. In fact, using them for a long period of time the body can build up a tolerance to the drug and require higher doses in order to achieve the same sort of effects, and even the drug may be prescribed by a doctor, you can become addicted. This is where things get dangerous, because you can easy overdose.
Barbiturate addicts experience many different symptoms like respiratory depression, low blood pressure, fever, confusion, impaired judgment, sedation and fatigue. Abuse of barbiturates could lead to respiratory arrest and death. Overdose symptoms also include confusion, slurred speech, drowsiness, and fatigue. If the drug is stopped suddenly, there is a high risk for withdrawal symptoms, which are very uncomfortable and even painful.
Barbiturates do have legitimate medical uses but they are very easy to abuse.
